Ferret Food

Now it's time to talk about one of my favorite subjects - ferret food.

How often should ferrets be fed?

Ferrets thrive on two meals a day - one in the morning, one in the evening. Make sure we have water available all the time.

What do ferrets eat?

We are carnivores so meat, fish and eggs are ideal. If you give us an egg, crack it open and give us the shell too - the calcium is good for us. We are not scavengers, so please make sure the food you give us is nice and fresh. We will also eat a little fruit such as banana - but only as a little treat. Our diet should be meat (protein and fat) based.

You can also buy dry ferret or dry kitten food for us, although we prefer fresh meat. Our toilet tends to be smell better if we're fed dried food.

What would wild ferrets eat?

We mainly hunt rodents such as mice, rats and rabbits. We also eat birds, chicks and eggs.

In our long association with people we have been used for rodent (rat) control and driving rabbits from their burrows into nets or into the sights of hunter's guns.
